The team also created new habitats for natural wildlife, e.g. a Woodland Bird feeding station and a Swift Tower, with nesting sites for 11 pairs of Swifts, an endangered bird species.
Numerous stakeholders of the area, such as Cub Scouts and local residents, have been engaged in this process, which has created a sense of ownership. The team could also record a significant increase of visitors and volunteers and a high visitor satisfaction. People started to engage with the wildlife that can be found on their doorsteps.
Clearly, the project team was successful in “Connecting Quarries & Communities” and therefore was chosen as the winner of this category in the Community Stream.
